Ashland State Park
Ashland State Park is a 470-acre DCR park at 156 West Union St, Ashland, MA 01721, built around Ashland Reservoir, with a popular 3.5-mile trail that loops the whole lake. It runs seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with swimming, fishing, boating and mountain biking, and the reservoir trail is walked year-round. DCR calls it one of its "hidden gems," but in peak summer it fills its lots to capacity, so arrive early. It is Hopkinton State Park's closest neighbour, and the two share a park office phone in the off season.
Ashland State Park at a Glance
The Reservoir Loop
The reason most people come outside summer is the 3.5-mile hiking trail that loops around the entire reservoir. DCR says it is visited year-round, and lists an accessible trail, hiking, biking and mountain biking among the park's activities. It's a clean, measured loop, which is more than Hopkinton's own trail map offers.
Swimming and Boating
DCR says Ashland Reservoir provides swimming, boating and fishing. Swimming is only in the designated areas, flotation devices are banned except Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and DCR lists a beach wheelchair. Unlike Hopkinton, DCR's list for Ashland includes motorized boating as well as non-motorized boating, canoeing and kayaking, with a boat ramp. DCR's Ashland page names no rental operator, so bring your own boat.
Parking and Fees
Ashland charges the same DCR daily fee as Hopkinton, $8 for Massachusetts plates and $30 for others, but over a shorter season: Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day Monday. The meter is at the Contact Station at the park entrance, and no cash is accepted; the YODEL app works too. DCR's $60 annual pass and lifetime senior pass are accepted, and cars with a handicapped, Purple Heart or Disabled Veteran plate park free (details on our Hopkinton parking page, which uses the same DCR rules).
Like Hopkinton, Ashland temporarily closes on busy days when parking reaches capacity and reopens as spaces free up.
Hours and Season
DCR lists the hours as sunrise to sunset and says the park operates seasonally between Memorial Day and Labor Day. When we read DCR's page in October 2026 it said the park gates were closed for the season; the reservoir trail is still described as visited year-round. Call the off-season number, (508) 435-4303, before an off-season visit.
Picnics
Ashland has limited picnic areas with charcoal grills and tables, and DCR offers a pavilion through its ReserveAmerica site. Grills and fires are allowed only in the designated picnic areas. For a big group, Hopkinton's two pavilions and dozen-plus picnic areas are the larger option.
Rules
- Dogs on a leash at all times, everywhere in the park; no dogs on beaches May 1 to September 15.
- No swimming outside the designated swimming areas; no flotation devices except Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
- No grilling or fires outside designated picnic areas.
- Off-road vehicles of any kind are prohibited.
- No drones without a permit.
Ashland or Hopkinton?
Pick Ashland for the 3.5-mile lake loop, a smaller park and motorboat access. Pick Hopkinton for two lifeguarded beaches, boat rentals, more picnic space and more than 10 miles of trails. Both fill up on hot summer weekends, and both are part of the same 19th-century Sudbury River reservoir system built for Boston's water (history). Whitehall State Park is the third, with no swimming at all.
