Fishing

Fishing is allowed at Hopkinton State Park, and DCR lists it among the park's accessible activities. You can fish from shore or from a kayak, canoe or other non-motorized boat on Hopkinton Reservoir; motors of any kind are not allowed. You need a Massachusetts freshwater fishing license, sold online through MassFishHunt, and DCR's park page links straight to MassWildlife's trout stocking report, where you can filter by town to see what has been stocked in Hopkinton and when.

Where to Fish

Hopkinton Reservoir is the main water, with the smaller Swimming Pond beside it. The obvious spots are along the reservoir shore away from the two beaches, where swimmers have priority in season. DCR does not allow swimming outside the designated beaches, and no boats are allowed at Main (Lower) Beach, so keep lines and boats clear of the swim areas in summer.

DCR's trail map shows two places to get a boat on the water: a boat ramp near the boathouse inside the main area, and a canoe launch with parking on Cedar Street on the east side of the reservoir. DCR's park page describes the ramp as car-top only.

Fishing From a Boat

Only non-motorized boats are allowed: DCR's rule is no motorized watercraft of any kind. That makes a kayak or canoe the way to reach water you can't cast to from shore. If you don't have one, Regatta Point Community Sailing rents kayaks and canoes at the boathouse from May through September.

Trout Stocking

MassWildlife stocks brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout in more than 450 lakes, ponds, rivers and streams across Massachusetts each year. Its stocking report has a map and a table you can filter by town or waterbody, and it notes that stocking can change with staffing, equipment, water levels and weather. Check it for Hopkinton before you go rather than relying on last year's pattern.

License and Limits

Accessible Fishing

DCR lists fishing among Hopkinton State Park's accessibility features, along with an accessible beach, beach wheelchairs and accessible restrooms. Call the park office at (508) 435-4303 to ask which shoreline spot is best for a wheelchair or walker on the day you visit.

Ice Fishing

DCR's Hopkinton page doesn't list ice fishing. If that's what you're after, nearby Whitehall State Park is, in DCR's words, a popular ice-fishing spot.

Other Fishing Nearby

Whitehall State Park, also in Hopkinton, is built for anglers with boats: DCR lists a trailer boat ramp and allows motorboats at up to 12 mph, but no swimming. Ashland State Park lists fishing and motorized boating on Ashland Reservoir, with a boat ramp. Both are short drives from Hopkinton State Park.

Parking for Anglers

In season, every car pays DCR's daily parking fee. Early-morning anglers have the easiest time getting in on summer weekends, when the park can close temporarily once its lots fill. Park hours are sunrise to sunset.
