Boston Marathon Start Line
The Boston Marathon starts on Main Street in downtown Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and follows Route 135 through Ashland, Framingham, Natick and Wellesley toward Boston. That's how the Boston Athletic Association describes the course in its 2026 spectator guide, and the Town of Hopkinton's marathon page is headed "It All Starts Here." The start is near the town common, where roads close early on race morning. Hopkinton State Park is about 2 miles north of downtown on Route 85, so a park visit and a look at the start line fit easily in one day the rest of the year.
The Start Line at a Glance
Where Exactly Is the Start Line?
The BAA says the course starts on Main Street in Hopkinton. The Town of Hopkinton describes the roads immediately around the start line and town common as Main Street, Ash Street, Park Street and Hayden Rowe. The town publishes a start line public-access map for race day on its Boston Marathon page.
Watching the Start
The BAA's own advice for spectators: arrive early to the start line on Main Street and watch about 30,000 participants leave Hopkinton. In 2026 the first start was the men's wheelchair race at 9:06 am, followed by the other divisions and the mass waves through the morning. Check the BAA's spectator guide for the current year's times.
Race-Day Road Closures in Hopkinton
For 2026 the town closed the roads immediately around the start line and town common (Main, Ash, Park and Hayden Rowe streets) at 6:30 am, and every other road into downtown to general traffic at 7:00 am. The BAA's guide puts Hopkinton's closures at roughly 7:00 am to 1:30 pm. The town's blocking points included:
- West Main Street at Lumber Street
- Wood Street at Elm Street
- Hayden Rowe Street at Chestnut
- Ash Street at Blueberry Lane
- Cedar Street at Legacy Farms North
- East Main Street at every intersection, plus roads next to wherever runners, spectators and workers are
The town says recent years have followed the same pattern. It posts closed-road and detour maps before each race, and sends emergency alerts through CodeRED; text HOPKINTONMA to 24639 to sign up.
When Is the Boston Marathon?
The race is run on a Monday in April. The Town of Hopkinton listed the 2026 race for Monday, April 20. For next year's date, entry and runner information, use the BAA's Boston Marathon pages, which the town links from its own.
Visiting the Start Line on Other Days
Outside race weekend, Main Street is an ordinary downtown street, and the start area is near the town common. It's a short drive from Hopkinton State Park: DCR's directions to the park start from the third traffic light in downtown Hopkinton and run about 2 miles north on Route 85 to the entrance (directions). Pair the two for a day out, with a swim or a walk at the park and a photo stop downtown.
Does the Park Close on Marathon Day?
The Boston Marathon is run in April, before Hopkinton State Park's summer swim and fee seasons. Neither DCR's park page nor the town's marathon page says anything about the park on race day. With Cedar Street blocked at Legacy Farms North and roads into downtown closed from early morning, assume the drive to and from the park will be harder that morning, and check DCR Park Alerts.
