Picnic Areas & Pavilions

Hopkinton State Park has more than a dozen picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills, free to use on a first-come basis once you've paid to park, plus two pavilions you can reserve for groups of up to 125. DCR says the park has hundreds of picnic tables and fixed grills, which is why it is one of the busiest parks in its Central Region. There is no camping: DCR's reservation site says Hopkinton is day-use only, with no overnight or after-hours stays.

First-Come Picnic Areas

The picnic areas are spread through the main recreation area, along the park roads and near both beaches, and DCR describes a mix of sunny and shaded spots. Each is outfitted with tables and charcoal grills. You can't reserve them; on a summer weekend, the best tables go early. Grilling and fires are allowed only in the designated picnic areas. DCR's trail map marks each picnic area.

The Two Pavilions

Each pavilion is a covered 24-by-52-foot concrete patio with picnic tables that seat up to 100, surrounded by a mowed field. They differ in setting:

Each pavilion has a large charcoal grill sized for a group. Bring your own charcoal; firewood and brush can't be burned. You may bring your own propane or butane grill or camp stove, but no flames or heat on the grass or on top of wooden tables. Drinking-water fountains are on site, and you can ask ahead for a hose hookup if you bring your own hose.

How to Reserve

A Booking Doesn't Guarantee Entry

This is the rule groups miss. DCR's reservation site says a pavilion reservation does not guarantee entry: if the park reaches capacity, the gates close and no one gets in until they reopen, with no exceptions. Tell guests to arrive early. The reservation also doesn't include parking. Every car pays the daily fee, and pavilion guests share the lots with the public; there are no reserved spaces.

Party Rules

Big Groups Without a Pavilion

Without a pavilion booking, DCR says gatherings of more than 25 people need a State Parks Special Use Permit. Youth groups arriving by bus can look into DCR's Youth Group Bus Pass, but DCR asks them to contact the park first because weekdays fill quickly.

Can You Camp at Hopkinton State Park?

No. DCR's reservation site says the park offers two day-use pavilions but no camping or after-hours stays, with no early entry or late exit. Cars left inside after closing are locked in. See hours.
